The key to knowing your motorcycle helmet fits you properly is to make sure it feels snug and solid but not uncomfortable when you put it on.
If your helmet is loose, it could come off or twist around on your head in a serious crash. And wind flowing from underneath when you ride can force it up and strain your neck.
A tight helmet will pinch your ears and press against your forehead. It will cause headaches and distract you from your ride and from surrounding traffic.
When you try on helmets before you buy, remember these key points...

A helmet that fits you properly will require some force to put on. It may seem tight as it slides over your head because of the inside padding causing resistance.
If a helmet slides too easily over your head, it will not be snug enough to remain properly positioned or to prevent annoying wind noise from filling the helmet.
You will know a helmet fits properly when all of its interior padding makes solid contact with your head. A helmet will become uncomfortable and not protect you adequately if it only makes contact on the top of your head.
When you put on a full-face helmet, it should hold your cheeks and jaw firmly. It should make solid contact with the top and sides of your head. Many full-face helmets offer removable/interchangeable cheek pads. Different size pads can create the best helmet fit.
Your helmet should surround and "hug" your head with even pressure throughout. It shouldn't create "hot spots" due to uneven pressure points. It should not press uncomfortably against your temples, forehead or cheeks.
The padding inside a helmet that is comfortably snug will compress and remain firm as it molds to your head.
A helmet with padding that creates a seal around your ears will block wind noise and protect your hearing. It will not block out important sounds such a voices or car horns.
Your helmet should not move when you shake your head forcefully up and down or from side-to-side.
Your nose or chin should not touch the faceshield.
A full-face helmet's faceshield should seal the eye port.
A faceshield should move smoothly and easily and stay up when you raise it.
A faceshield should not distort your view -- anywhere.

Do the "roll-ff" test to make sure a helmet will stay on when you need it
No helmet can protect you if will not stay on in an accident. So try this simple "roll-off" test before you buy or use a particular helmet. Pull on the helmet and snug down the chin strap. Grab the helmet's rear edge where it contacts the back of your neck. Then try to lift and roll the helmet forward off your head. Give it a good tug, even if the pressure is uncomfortable. If the helmet slides forward and off, you know you should continue to look for one that stays on through this test.
Does the helmet you are considering give you the features you want most?
When you know a helmet fits comfortably and passes the "roll-off" test, see that it has all other features you want.
Such comfort features include...

Lots of snug padding around your head
A snug seal surrounding -- but not touching -- your ears
A thick, padded roll hugging the back of your head and neck
No protrusions poking or pressing against your head or face

One final test before you take it home...

Put on the helmet, tighten the chinstrap and keep it on for it for at least 20 to 30 minutes.
Get used to how it feels and let it settle in.

After a while, if the helmet makes you uncomfortable by -- for example -- pressing against your forehead or the top of your head or pinching an ear, try cheek-pads that are sized differently. If that does not do the trick, let that particular helmet go. Continue the procedure with another "perfect prospect" until you find the one that satisfies you completely.

Although mopeds are not in the same class of motor vehicles as scooters and motorcycles, safety should always be of paramount importance. There are many states in the U.S. that do not have helmet laws in force; however, riders of mopeds should always wear a helmet. Helmets have been proven, over the years, to provide the most effective protection for riders. Statistically, motorcycle, scooter and moped riders wearing helmets who are involved in even minor traffic accidents fare better than those riders without helmets.

Mopeds are motorized bicycles and can travel at much higher speeds than your average bicycle that is not motorized. Original mopeds were standard bicycles, with pedals, that featured a motor to assist the rider in moving forward. Today's moped standards vary to include any motorcycle type vehicle with an engine displacement of 50 cubic centimeters or less. Mopeds are often allowed to be driven by riders younger than the legal driving age and are also restricted to a maximum speed of 30 miles per hour.

Standard bicycle helmets may not provide full protection from head injury in a moped accident. In countries where moped riders often fail to use moped helmets, or use them properly, the rate of fatalities for traffic accidents is extremely high. Safety when riding a moped should be considered the same as if riding a motorcycle. Moped riders should always wear a moped helmet, should always assume drivers do not see them and will not stop and moped riders should always stay to paths and streets they are designated for. Keeping away from high speed driving locations with regular traffic can go a long way toward avoiding accidents with other vehicles.

Moped helmets are offered by several different manufacturers and dealers and are usually specifically designed for riders on mopeds. Helmets will differ from a regular motorcycle helmet in design and should be fitted to the individual rider and the location they will be riding in primarily. Moped helmets provide riders with a margin of safety when involved in a traffic accident with another vehicle. Even low speed accidents have been the source of debilitating or fatal head injuries for moped riders not using moped helmets.

Choosing a DOT Approved Helmet

I doubt the first motorcycle helmet that came out which was invented by Gottlieb Daimler in 1885 was dot approved. Well back in his day a bike was not capable of the speeds that today's bikes are. So there was likely not a need for helmets that were approved for a high impact crash. the department of transportation which is what DOT stands for did not start approving helmets until 1974 by introducing a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for motorcycle helmets.

When you buy motorcycle helmets for yourself or for a biker you know make sure that the helmet has been DOT approved. What this means is basically that the manufacturer of the helmet has submitted their product for testing and approval with the Department of transportations. Once the motorcycle helmet bears the mark DOT Approved you can rest assured that it meets the standards for safety as set forth by the department of transportation. Snell is another entity that can approve a motorcycle helmet for safety, however they are not an official government agency and therefore do not carry the weight that dot has. So next time you buy helmets make sure its dot helmet.

DOT motorcycle helmets come in thousands of variations and are made by many manufacturers, so choosing one that fits your personality and riding style should be quite easy. Helmets come in some basic styles. You have full face, half face, skull caps or beanies and flip up which are also called modular motorcycle helmets. Each have some advantages and disadvantages. For example the full face helmet is most popular with your sport bike riders however some guys that ride a cruiser will also wear these, however the cruiser crowd tends to lean towards half face of beanie type skull caps also affectionately called brain buckets.

Half face motor cycle helmets are more popular with the cruiser and chopper crowd because they allow you to get that wind in your face type feeling which the full face does not allow. generally a half face will require you to get some goggles or some sort of eye protection, however their are some models that have a built in flip up face shield.

Now the Beanie or skull cap type of helmet is especially popular with your custom chopper and cruiser crowd. I think this is mainly because they are just more suited too their bikes when it comes to looks. Even a DOT skull cap or beanie isn't going to give you the protection that a full face helmet will. However I know it looks kind of goofy to be on an outlaw looking chopper in a full face motor cycle helmet, that is why most of these riders prefer a beanie or skull cap.

Whatever type of helmet you prefer just remember it is important to at least wear some sort of helmet when you are out tearing up the streets. Also most states have helmet laws which require you to wear some sort of helmet or you get a hefty ticket.

Full Helmet

How to Know if a Motorcycle Helmet Fits Correctly

There is no denying the importance of motorcycle helmets for the safety of riders. It is important to note, however that all helmets are not created equal. The issue has to do with more than just comfort. Two persons who seem to have the same sized head may not get the same fit from a helmet. It stands to reason that before purchasing one, a proper fit must be ensured.

Sizing a Motorcycle Helmet

Just as our heads have different shapes and sizes the padding of motorcycle helmets also varies. Differences may be based on the brand of helmet, the type of material used, and the design. With so many different types of motorcycle gear on the market, helmet sizes vary from brand to brand. There are certain pointers which will help you to determine if the helmet you want to purchase is your best fit. These are:

The first thing to do is measure your head. If you already know your hat size, you're ahead of the curve. Using a tape measure, take the measurement around your head. Start at the center of the forehead 1-inch above the eyebrows. Run the tape around the back of the head. Make sure to measure at the point at which it protrudes the most to get the best measurement. Then bring the tape measure back around to meet the end at the center of your forehead.

The helmet should have a size tag on the inside. Try to match this to the measurement you got with the tape measure. Even after finding a helmet with the right size, the fit may not seem right. Depending on the brand and style you may have to go up or down a size to get the right fit.

Test for Fit

When you choose a motorcycle helmet, make sure that the top edge at the front is above the eyebrows so it doesn't obstruct your vision. The padding should rest just on the bone that supports your eyebrows. Shields and visors should not obstruct vision in any way.

Using your hands, rock the helmet back and forth to see how much play it has. Also repeat the movement from side to side while keeping your head as steady as possible. It should be reasonably snug but not too tight. Be sure to use a mirror when doing this as this will give you a better sense of how well it fits.

The Safety Standards of Motorcycle Helmets

In 1972, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (HHTSA) set about creating new minimal safety standards for motorcycle helmets. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218, commonly called the DOT (Department of Transportation) standard, was initiated and signed into law. The act marked the culmination of years of review and analysis. The DOT standard was revised slightly in 1974 and has subsequently undergone other minor alterations, but basically has remained unchanged for more than 30 years.

The purpose of DOT standard 218 is to identify helmets that comply with government standards for helmet safety. It should be noted that motorcycle helmets are not required in some states and that while the Federal Government has set safety standards, there is a general lack of enforcement and oversight by the program. Basically, the government has established outdated safety standards and relies on the manufacturers to comply and attest to their compliance with these standards. Based on the manufacturer's representation, a DOT stamp of approval is placed on each helmet.

This is not to say that the government does not test helmets. Each year, DOT provides token testing and presents manufacturers with the results. However, in 2001, the government inspected just 40 helmets. The Department of Transportation relies almost exclusively on the helmet manufacturers to meet the safety standards. As government-testing requirements are minimal, motorcyclists have long expressed concern over the safety of helmets.

The DOT standard for testing requires that helmets be tested twice at four different impact zones. DOT approved helmets are dropped from a 6 foot height onto a flat anvil and then again from a 4.5 foot height. The manufacturer is required to sign off on compliance with these standards prior to applying the DOT emblem to the helmet. However, in the 40 unit testing performed directly by DOT in 2001, 20% of the helmets failed the test.

In the motorcycle helmet industry, more stringent safety requirements are applied by the independent Snell Standards set by the Snell Memorial Foundation (SMF). The Snell Memorial Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing motor sporting helmet safety. The foundation was established in 1957 in memory of racecar driver William Peter Snell and has since served as the recognized leader in safety standards for a variety of sporting helmets. Unlike the Department of Transportation, the SMF aggressively and randomly tests many motorcycle helmets each year.

SMF maintains two testing facilities; one in the U.S. and another in England. Manufacturers, who subscribe to the Snell standards, submit their helmets to the organization for recognized certification. These helmet manufacturers agree to periodic testing and agree to comply with the more current Snell safety standards for motorcycle helmets. Snell safety standards are not exclusive to the motorcycle industry and are used for harness racing, other equestrian sports, cycling, skiing and snowboarding.

While the DOT standards have been virtually unchanged since 1974, the SMF standards have been updated every five years. Additionally, the Snell testing procedures are much more aggressive. Whereas DOT tests use drop elevations of 6 feet and 4.5 feet respectively, the SMF utilizes 10 foot and 7.5 foot drop elevations.

Both DOT and Snell acknowledge that it is rarely the fall that damages the head. Rather, it is the sudden stop. To measure the effectiveness of the motorcycle helmet in coping with the stress of a sudden halt, both testing programs utilize an accelerator set inside the headgear.

The Snell tests do not leave interpretation of the results to the manufacturer. These more strenuous tests focus on the manufacturing quality of the motorcycle helmets. As a result, the Snell method of testing does not use the flat anvil, but rather an edged anvil that is designed to further test the helmet's material construction.

Cyclists who use helmets bearing the Snell label of approval are assured of helmets that not only surpass the DOT safety standards, but have undergone independent testing and whose manufacturers have made assurances of strict compliance. The Snell certificate of approval goes a long way with consumers and industry experts. The Snell label on the back of the helmet is the industry symbol for safety design and structural integrity.

Ten Things to Consider When Purchasing a New Motorcycle Helmet

Whether you are a new cyclist, getting your favorite rider a new helmet as a gift, or an experienced rider considering a change of headgear, there are a few basic issues to consider before you purchase your new motorcycle helmet.

1.) Does it pass the safety tests? - That snazzy new brain bucket may look good, but it'll be of little use if it doesn't meet certain safety standard regulations. The US Department of Transportation requires that all helmets meet certain standards, such as impact absorption, penetration prevention and strap stability. When a helmet is manufactured to meet these standards, the DOT puts a neat little sticker right on it (or the box) declaring so. A DOT certification should be the minimum standard to look for.

2.) Does it pass the roll off test? - Your helmet should not be so loose that you can roll it off the front of your head when it is properly fastened. To perform a roll-off test, secure the helmet to your head. Grasp the back of the helmet and try to pull it forward over your face. If it comes off, even though it hurts your ears in doing so, the helmet is not a proper fit or style for you.

3.) Does it stay put? - To check the fit on your helmet, as quickly as possible shake your head as if trying to touch your ear to your shoulder, from side to side as if saying a big "No" and from back to front touching your chin to your chest. If the helmet stays in place, it fits. If not, either look for another helmet, or see if there's a way to make yours fit better. Many helmets come with advice for giving them a snug, safe fit. Your dealer may be able to help, too..

4.) Is it comfortable? - Now, some riders will tell you that there is no such thing as a comfortable helmet. We'll not debate that here, but we will say that the more helmets you try on, the better your odds of finding one you like. Full-face motorcycle helmets are considered more comfortable by most riders who have tried them. Comfort levels increase with the quality of the brand and the cost of the helmet, too. The things to avoid are squeezing of the ears, pressure at the crown and/or forehead, and any general "hard points" in the helmet. Visit several dealers or shops. Try on lots of different brands and models. Put them all through the roll-off and head-shake tests, too, to ensure that fit and safety are a factor as well as comfort. Leave a helmet on for 15 minutes or so, to allow it to "settle" on your head. Next to your saddle, it'll be your biggest source of comfort or discomfort while riding.

5.) What's it cover? - Full-face helmets are considered the safest and most comfortable of the lot. Flip-face, modular, or system motorcycle helmets are a good marriage between the open-faced models and the full-faced ones. Open-face models can expose the rider to facial injuries in a crash, and studies have shown that riders who suffer facial injuries are 3 times more likely to suffer brain injury, as well. When considering a new helmet, remember that one day your chin could be bouncing off the pavement.

6.) What about the face shield? - It should seal the helmet all the way around the edges to prevent wind leakage. It should have VESC - 8 and ANSI Z - 87 safety standards, usually molded right into it. It should be easy to operate, raising easily and staying up without dropping. Look for any sight-distorting imperfections. Most shields offer UV protection to some degree. A tinted face shield might be a good addition, for those really sunny rides.

7.) Any convenience features? - Does it come with a storage bag? Does it have an extra face shield? How easy is it to change the face shields? Will the strap end stay where it's supposed to or is it going to flap in the wind? How easy is it going to be to remove and wash the lining? Take your helmet for a test drive. Attempt to change the face shield. Mess with the strap. Take the lining out. Short of dropping it from the roof to test its scratch resistance, see just how many convenience features your helmet has, and whether or not they are really convenient for you.

8.) Any comfort features? You thought we'd already discussed comfort, hadn't you? Well, there are things that can make a helmet more comfortable like vents, padded straps and variable thickness inner padding. What one rider may consider comfortable, another might find constricting.

9.) Looks? Everybody wants the coolest looking dome on the street, but beware that the more graphics and colors used increases the price significantly. If you find one that passes all your criteria for the "perfect" helmet, but it's astronomically priced, ask if its available in a solid color. If you plan on custom painting, your best bet is solid white. The brighter the color, the more other drivers will notice you, so you may want to consider red, yellow or even orange. Some motorcycle manufacturers offer limited helmet color schemes to match each year's bikes. Some helmet companies do, too.

10.) Cost? So, your quest has led you to a helmet with a price tag so high it's going to drain your bank account. What now? Well, take note of the bit above about graphics. Try to negotiate with your dealer. He's invested a lot of time into you, helping you try on different helmets, get the right fit etc. It may be worth it to him to lower the price a bit. See if you can get a slightly less-tricked-out model. Don't sacrifice comfort or safety for the sake of a few bucks, but if you can afford a less-expensive model with fewer convenience features, go for it!

You may actually put more time and effort and energy into buying your new helmet than you did your bike. But it'll be worth it in the long ride.

Helmets

Leather jackets tend to be well built and last for a long time, decades, even. They are the classic protective wear associated with motorcycles, so many more traditional motorcyclists prefer leather. Today his smile is a little crooked, but he keeps his safety helmet on perfectly straight.

According to the Brain Injury Association, every year in the United States 1.4 million people are treated for traumatic brain injury (TBI) in hospital emergency rooms. About 50,000 people die each year from TBI, and 80,000 experience the onset of long-term disability.

Major causes of TBI are falls (28%), motor vehicle crashes (20%), struck by/against (19%), and assaults (11%). Alert parents need to know how to protect their children from brain injuries, and how to identify a serious injury.

Some Of The Facts

Nearly 200,000 traumatic brain injuries occur on U.S. sports fields each year. An estimated 65 percent of the injuries occur to young people 5 to 18 years old.

Repeated concussions not only impair memory and mental function over the long term, but may trigger "second impact syndrome," a sudden, fatal brain swelling.

There is no such thing as a "modest" concussion. And you don't have to be knocked out to suffer one. More than 90 percent of concussions don't involve loss of consciousness.

Experts agree that nobody who still has symptoms of a brain injury should be allowed to play again until all symptoms have cleared.

After a brain injury, the risk for a second injury is three times greater; after the second injury, the risk for a third injury is eight times greater.

A properly fitted helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment for many activities. For example, medical research shows that 88 percent of cyclists' brain injuries can be prevented by a helmet.

In The Event Of A Brain Injury

After any fall or activity involving contact to the head, see a physician if any of the following symptoms are present: thinking problems; memory loss; dizziness; headache; nausea; sensory changes; balance, sleep or pain problems; changes in personality, mood or behavior; or trouble communicating.
Ask your child's teacher(s) to call you if they see any symptoms.
When your child leaves the emergency room or office following a brain injury, the doctor or nurse should give you instructions on caring for your child over the next 24 hours, and describe any important changes to watch for. If you do not get these "Head Sheet" instructions, ask for them.
The effects of a "mild" brain injury may not be seen immediately. See a doctor who specializes in brain injuries right away if you notice these changes in your child:
-severe headache that does not go away or get better.
-seizures, eyes fluttering, body going stiff, staring into space.
-child forgets everything, amnesia.
-hands shake, tremors, muscles get weak, loss of muscle tone.
-nausea or vomiting that returns.

Although the researchers argument is based on the universal helmet laws, the impact of these helmets is modest.

Some anti-helmet law activists dispute that helmets that are on balance, reduce motorcycle safety. This is because they make riders reckless, make their heads heavy or impair their vision, sensitivity to pressure and hearing abilities change. However, there is no much evidence to support this claim. It does not seem to have a very big effect but in principle, the fatality rate should not matter. As I am writing this article I am thinking of the recent accident involving the Pittsburg Steelers star quarterback, "Big Ben" Roethlisberger. If he had been wearing a helmet his injuries would not have been nearly as severe.

For most of us bikers a helmet just doesn't fit our perception of what biking is all about, which is freedom! I mean, hey it just doesn't look cool to be on a hog with that little sissy helmet. But, I think it looks way less cool to have your face all scarred up from sliding on it down the road!

According to statistics almost every crash where the rider wasn't wearing a helmet resulted in a major head injury. In one study out of 900 crashes there were 980 head and neck injuries which seems to indicate that the passengers on many of these motorcycles were not wearing helmets either.

Our neighbors to the north in Canada have now made it illegal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet due to the large percentage of fatalities in accidents in which the rider was not wearing one. Of course in the United States, like many other laws it is left up to the individual states to decide the ruling. I know where I live in Florida they repealed the helmet law a few years ago and according to an EMT buddy of mine it has caused a dramatic increase in head injuries.

If you value your brain and your life you should be responsible enough to wear a helmet. Some of the factors that you should consider when buying a motorcycle helmet are below.

All motorcycle helmets consist of two main parts, an inner shell or liner which is made of impact reducing foam and an outer shell which is made to absorb the initial impact and protect your head as well as take all of the damage that the road or other hard object would have done to your head.

Off-Road Helmet
An off-road helmet includes elements from both full-face and open-face helmets. Like a full face helmet, an off road helmet covers the skull and base of the skull. It also includes an elongated chin bar for extra protection. However, unlike the full-face helmet, an off-road helmet has an open face area. Most off-road helmets include a sun visor as well. Wear Motorcycle Helmets? That Is A Good Question!

Motorcyclists are always evaluating the use of motorcycle helmets. Is this simply a matter of preference or are there significant issues to be considered?

A friend of mine (Bill) has chosen to ride with a helmet, or at times without a helmet. He says it depends upon riding conditions for him.

One day he was on a two lane road, traveling about 50mph when a tractor trailer truck pulled out from the right side of the street to go the same direction. His thought was to maintain his speed and simply pass the truck. Which, most likely could be done. Unfortunately the truck driver did not have enough room for the turn, and stopped dead still, crossing both lanes.

Bill was now approaching the truck too fast and too close to stop safely. He tried breaking hard but immediately knew he was facing the side of the trailer head-on. With quick thinking he laid his Harley on the side and slid under the trailer and on down the road a couple hundred feet.

Relaying his story to me, he was flat on his back, feet first, with his arms spread out and his head bopping on the highway. When all was finished he gave credit to God for helping him and praised his destroyed helmet for saving his life. Plus, the leather jacket and gloves that had taken the tears in place of him.

My friend only suffered from some sore muscles and hurt pride. But, it brings up the subject of helmet safety.

In the KSL-TV News of South Jordan, the Police Chief ,Dan Pearson, is likewise teaching people that motorcycle helmets save lives, after losing three friends to motorcycle accidents in two years. All three suffered from head injuries and none were wearing motorcycle helmets.

Then, the police chief himself was involved in an accident on highway 89 North of Afton, Wyoming.

A truck towing a horse trailer had passed him and pulled in front of him, hitting the front of his motorcycle with the spare tire mounted on the back. Dan was thrown off his bike, landing headfirst. He says, This injury would have been a fatal blow if I had not had the helmet on. Dan suffered from bruises and a few broken bones.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcyclists survive a crash and receive less serious injuries when wearing a helmet. They report that at least 600 people are saved each year.

One question that is asked, motorcycle helmets might protect your brain but can it increase your chances of a broken neck?

Dr. Michael Yorgason, a surgeon at Montana Orthopedics and Sport Medicine, states that the findings from medical literature shows: autopsy studies done after fatal motorcycle accidents have shown that neck injuries and fractures are equally likely, whether you are wearing a helmet or not.

Yet, most medical reports support the use of motorcycle helmets. They believe that the helmet generally decreases the risk of head and brain injury significantly and surmise that wearing them does not increase your risk of neck injury.

An Italian study concluded that a helmet decreased injury by 66%.

A Thailand study found that after making motorcycle helmets mandatory, head injuries decreased by 41% in 2 years.

Now, in Kentucky, a study revealed that brain injury increased by 4.3 times when not wearing a helmet.

In an article written by Jonathan P. Goldstein, PhD. titled The Effects of Motorcycle Helmet Use on the Probability of Fatality and the Severity of Head and Neck Injuries. He concludes that there are a number of variables in a study that puts the study in question.

Major differences are held concerning helmet use or non-helmet use. Normal results compare death and injury rates are two and three times greater for non-helmet riders and increases in occurrence rates in repeal years that vary from 19% to 63%.

On one side: the helmet verses the non-helmet study fails to consider these two classes of riders. Stating that helmet riders are more cautious by nature.

One, they drive slower, thus have slower speeds in crash situations. Two, they are less likely to have an accident. Three, helmet wearers are less likely to drink and drive (alcohol or use of drugs). These behavior changes dramatically reduce a riders risk.

On-the-other-hand, factors to consider are:
1-average age of the biker
2-average miles driven each year, per biker
3-average experience of the biker 4-the size of the motorcycle driven.

So, between the size of the bike, potential speed, age, risk taking and alcohol ingestion; simply, cannot realistically prove the effectiveness of helmet use.

The Goldstein study did approach these variables in question. They reported a study that evaluates the effectiveness of motorcycle helmets in accident situations. The conclusions are:
1-Motorcycle helmets have no statistically significant effect on the probability of fatality.
2-Helmets reduce the severity of head injuries.
3-Past a critical impact speed of 13 mph, helmets increased the severity of neck injuries.

The report then concluded that helmet users face a trade-off between reductions in the severity of head injuries and increases in the severity of neck injuries.

Under these circumstances a mandatory helmet use law cannot be reasoned to be an effective method to stop an individuals death or injury when involved in an accident.

Perhaps other choices need to be considered in providing safety in motorcycle use. Here are three suggestions.

One, educate the general driving public (car and truck drivers) in road use with motorcycles. Two, educate inexperienced motorcyclists on accident avoidance (evasive action) and the proper use of these powerful machines.
Three, create a strict enforcement of drunk driving laws. [Some studies show that alcohol consumption is the major factor in deaths and injury.]

Harley-Davidson offers basic and advanced training to 200+ dealerships in 30 states. Honda has four training centers. BMW is considering advanced training but says they tend to attract seasoned riders.

It is believed that training cuts panic. You need to know how to negotiate a curve and resist the urge to brake, etc.

Here are some other factors that need to be considered. Tires should be inflated to the proper level.

A riders visibility to be seen. Tests have shown that the plain white motorcycle helmets are the easiest to be seen. Clothing makes a difference between day/night.

US DOT findings discovered that following the Helmet Law Repeal in Texas and Arkansas from Aug/Sept of 1997 to May 1998, helmet use dropped to 52% in Arkansas and to 66% in Texas.

In Arkansas motorcycle fatalities rose 21% following the repeal and head injuries increased 18.5%. Texas fatalities rose 31%.

One court case in California disputed what standards were set for qualifying a helmet as safe. For a list of the US Government Compliance Testing of Motorcycle Helmets you can check to see if your helmet passed or failed. Check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

When I am on my motorcycle, I know what I am doing. I do not know what the other driver is doing. So, with the many facets of helmet use and considering the pro/cons, I choose to wear a helmet. You will have to decide for yourself!

Helmets

Helmets are the things that you wear on your entire head so that you have protection in the event of an accident. This can be a very important part of your motorcycle gear collection because of the safety factor and that it helps to keep you alive. Some states even require you to wear them while you are riding your motorcycle in the first place.

Goggles

If you decide that you don't want to wear a helmet or are not required to, then you might want to consider goggles when you are on your motorcycle. Most of the time you will be taking your friends with you on your cross country ride, so you might want to make sure that everyone knows with their jobs are. That way everyone will be organized but still having fun.

What to take

OK so now you decided they're going to go with a group of your friends. You will all need to decide what you're going to take with you. Having a group is great because the saddlebags on your motorcycle probably will not carry very much. So where are you going to sleep? A good rule of thumb on your ride is to know where you want to stop. If you don't have a plan of stopping in a motel, you'll probably want to take at least a sleeping bag. Then you won't be stuck sleeping on the hard ground with nothing under you. You also may want to consider taking with you some credit cards or traveler's checks because you don't want to get stuck on the road with no money. After all your motorcycle does take gas to run, and you don't want to run out and be stuck on the highway.

So when you get ready to start your cross country ride, make sure that you have the things that you will need. This way you won't have any issues that you can't take care of on the road. Cross country rides can be extremely fun if they're well planned and everything is thought of. Just remember to have fun and be safe when you're out on the open road, even if you want to seem like a rebel. You don't want to get hurt because you're doing something stupid while on the road.

This Shoei RF200 is Extra Large size helmet (7 5/8 - 7 3/4) and features a lightweight, aerodynamic shell made of Fiberglass which offers superior ability to absorb shock, resist penetration and disperse energy. Fiberglass is not affected by common solvents and aging as are other materials.

DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage BELL R-T motorcycle helmet from 1981 in excellent condition. It is a size 7 . The chin strap and strap catch rings are in great condition as is the black edge trim. The helmet shell has it's original smooth glossy finish with a very minor "flea bite" nick the size of a needle head mainly scuffs on the top back of the shell surface. The internal cloth liner is in great condition, the soft padding is in great condition. The chinstrap is marked BELL R-T 3 - 81.

The History of the Motorcycle Helmet - the Laws and the Facts

The history of the motorcycle helmet, the laws and the facts are an interesting topic. There was no need for bikers to worry about motorcycle helmets when the first motorcycle was built in about 1885; this was because there was not much speed associated with this motorcycle. This would lead to the history of the motorcycle helmet-the laws and the facts.
A professor from the University of Southern California manufactured the first motorcycle helmet in 1953, because Harley Davidson and Indian Motorcycles were on the path to creating the motorcycle for the riders that wanted speed. As the need for riding faster rose so did the fatality rate of motorcycle riders.
The government began to see a need for helmets and in 1958 California Highway Patrol Officers began wearing the first helmets in hopes of setting an example for motorcycle riders in California.
By the year 1966 the was the Highway Safety Act, which required states to have mandatory helmet laws in order to receive federal funding for highways. In the year 1975 there were 47 states that acted in accordance with with the Highway Safety Act to receive the highway funding for construction and maintenance. This same year Congress repealed the Highway Safety Act and the fatality rate began to rise again in states that also repealed the helmet laws.
This has not changed while states have flipped back and forth enforcing and doing away with helmet laws and motorcycles have become faster the statistics show that while motorcycles are only 2% of the registered vehicles on the roadways there is an 8% fatality rate when involved in a motorcycle accident.
There have been studies done and one that was done in 1990 and although this was quite some time ago the data has not changed except for the amount of registered riders and the amount of injuries and fatalities. The University of California did this study and this study showed that in 900 motorcycle accidents there was approximately 980 head and neck injuries. This study took into account not only the rider but passenger's injuries and the study showed that these injuries were lessened with motorcyclists wearing helmets.
The history of the motorcycle helmet-the laws and the facts still apply today:
1. Fact: Head injuries are the leading cause of death for motorcycle riders involved in accidents.
2. Fact: Helmets are approximately 29% effective in preventing fatalities and head injuries.
3. Fact: A person who is not wearing a helmet is 40% more likely to be killed in an accident than the rider who is wearing a helmet.
4. Fact: A study done by Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System showed riders wearing helmets had a 70% chance of avoiding brain injuries. This study also showed riders not wearing helmets had a 3% chance of suffering worse injuries than riders wearing helmets.
5. Fact: An NHTSA study showed in 2003 that mile per mile the motorcyclist is 32 times more likely to be killed than the motorist in an auto.
Just these facts alone show a great difference in what a riders in accidents with and without helmets face. While helmet laws might not be enforced wearing a helmet does offer more protection when on the road for the rider and the passenger, it also makes a large difference between a fatality and brain injuries in an accident.
Riders enjoy the freedom that motorcycles give them, the air rushing by and the thrill and that can be as exciting with a helmet on as without one. This is especially true in beach areas like Culver City, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Santa Monica and Huntington Beach.
